iPhone Comparison: Apple’s iPhone fleet is bigger than ever: the iPhone 12 in two sizes joins four iPhone 13 models – plus there are older models such as the iPhone 11 or the iPhone SE. Which is the best iPhone for whom?

The iPhone 13 is here. Is now the right time to buy a model from the new series? Or should it be one of the predecessors, for example, the iPhone 12, the iPhone 11, or even the last remaining iPhone with a home button, the iPhone SE, from 2020? 

iPhone Comparison: iPhone 13 Pro Max: The Cordless Endurance Runner

It is not only the largest and heaviest iPhone but also Apple’s best to date. The great display and the good camera, which also impresses in low light, and the new triple telephoto and macro mode, are impressive. However, the main selling point is the battery life: almost 14 hours of endurance – the iPhone 13 Pro Max beats all previous iPhones and most of the top Android competitors by far. If necessary, it shows moving content smoothly at up to 120 Hertz.

iPhone 13: The Best Buy For Almost Everyone

Compared to its predecessor, Apple has improved exactly the right points with the iPhone 13: the main camera takes similarly good pictures as the 12 Pro Max, the display is finally really bright – and the iPhone 13 has made a big leap in battery life. The smartphone is even better than the 13 Pro in this discipline. Unfortunately, a tele lens is still missing. And technology fans should also miss the 120 Hertz display of the Pro versions. 

Which iPhone Is The Best Value For Money?

Among the iPhones with Face ID, the iPhone 12 mini offers the best performance for the money. It offers similar functions to the iPhone 13 mini, around 150 euros more expensive, but the display brightness and battery life are particularly worse. The iPhone XR with older technology is an alternative if you want a larger display. If Face ID, brilliant OLED contrasts, and 5G are not as important to you as a small case, it is worth looking at the comparatively cheaper iPhone SE2020. However, the display is very small, and the technology is no longer up-to-date. There is also the classic home button – because a fingerprint sensor is installed there, the SE is currently the only iPhone that can be easily unlocked biometrically with a fingerprint in the supermarket, even without an Apple Watch with the corona mask. The processor and WLAN technology come from the iPhone 11, the design from the iPhone.

Which iPhone To Buy Used?

Used iPhones are worthwhile if the battery still has a capacity of over 90 – or even better, 95 percent. A used iPhone 7 is currently the cheapest entry into the Apple world. It is still suitable for iOS 15, delivers just acceptable performance, and is as good as new or available in stores as a refurbished device. The iPhone 6S is an even cheaper alternative to a user device (if possible with a new battery and at least 64 GB of storage capacity), one of the most stable smartphones Apple has ever built – and the last iPhone with a classic headphone jack. In addition, like the iPhone 7, it has NFC for wireless payment via Apple Pay and has iOS 15. The 6S works slowly, so it is only worthwhile for cheap offers around 100 euros or acquisitions among friends.

iPhone Accessories: What You Need

Since October 2020, Apple has only delivered new iPhones with a USB-C Lightning cable. You have to buy a headset and power supply yourself. If you no longer have any old accessories in the house, you will need suitable accessories:

• Headphones/Headset: Bluetooth headphones are recommended here, especially small true wireless headphones for on the go. Tip: Apple’s AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro or newer Beats headphones with an Apple H1 chip make it easy to switch between several Apple products that are registered with the same Apple ID.
• Jack Adapter: To connect headphones with a jack plug, you need the Apple Lightning to 3.5 mm jack adapter from Apple.
• Power Supply: Every iPhone power supply with a Lightning cable also works with the new iPhones. For the USB-C to Lightning cable that has been supplied with new devices since October 2020, you need a power supply with a USB-C socket. A great side effect: It makes loading much faster. For around 25 euros, the official Apple 20W USB-C power adapter and other USB-C power supplies such as the Anker Nano are a few euros cheaper.
